How does a massage feel?
This varies somewhat on the techniques being used. In a general western style massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body relaxes, pressure will gradually be increased to relieve specific areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin.
In a general eastern style massage your session may start with broad palm kneading to relax the body and assess your body’s composition. As the massage continues you may experience a variety of stretching, mobilization and specific pressure over your body’s meridian points.
Our therapists are well versed in both western and eastern massage modalities and may incorporate both into your massage depending on the best technique needed for you as an individual. Feel free to inform your therapist of any techniques you do or don’t enjoy.
How will I feel after the massage?
Most people feel very relaxed and some experience release from long-term aches and pains developed from stresses, tension and/or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling “foggy”, most people experience an increase in energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, we recommended you drink an abundance of water after your treatment to avoid any lingering soreness, especially after deep work. We also recommend, after your treatment, that you refrain from any intake of toxins and/or dehydrating substances such as alcohol, caffeine, smoke, etc.
Are there any safety precautions when receiving massage therapy?
Certain medical conditions could require the exercise of caution concerning the advisability of receiving a massage. If you are in doubt and/or under medical supervision, check with your doctor before receiving massage therapy. Other contraindications include: Fever, Infection, Broken Bones, Infectious Disease including those effecting the skin, High Blood Pressure, Tumors, Open Wounds, Muscle Ruptures, Heavy Bruising, Herniation, Burns, Myositis, Ossificans, Thrombosis, and Bleeding Disorders such as Hemophilia.
In some cases, massage is extremely beneficial for some, but not for others. For example, some doctors say that massage is contraindicated for cancer, while others recommend massage for cancer patients. Be sure to inform your therapist before beginning your massage session of any new or pre-existing injuries, illnesses, broken bones, etc. that you have. Again, when in doubt, check with your doctor.
What do I do during a massage?
RELAX! and make yourself comfortable. If your therapist wants to adjust your position, he or she will either move you themselves or will ask you to move in whatever way is needed. Otherwise, relax, enjoy and let your therapist take care of you. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s completely up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax and enjoy. Do not hesitate to ask your therapist questions or let him/her know if you would like the pressure to be more gentle or more firm at any time.
What do I wear during a massage?
This varies somewhat depending on the massage style your therapist uses, you may or may not need to undress and can most certainly request to remain clothed. For a full body massage with oil or lotion, most people undress completely. However, you may choose to wear undergarments. Your therapist will give you privacy to undress, and you will be covered with a sheet at all times except for the area being worked on at that moment.
Where will my treatments take place?
Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music is usually played to help you relax. You will lie on a table or mat and in some cases sit on a chair, both specifically designed for massage and your comfort.
How long will my massage take?
The length of your massage completely depends on the length you prefer and choose. Narayan Wellness offers massage sessions for 30, 60, or 90 minutes. It is important to note, however, that Narayan Wellness follows the industry standard of a “massage hour” for all sessions. This allows our clients 5 minutes of privacy prior to and following the hands on portion of the session (i.e. 60min. massage session = 50min.+ actual hands on massage).
Does Narayan have a cancellation policy?
Yes, we do have a 24-hour cancellation policy. The client will be charged or billed for the full cost of the appointment for any no-show or cancellation within 24 hours of the pre-scheduled appointment. Remember, you are making a commitment not only to improved wellness, but to us as well. Please respect our time and effort in this matter.
How do I sign-up for classes?
While we do offer monthly class memberships with discounted rates for our classes, you are more than welcome to “walk-in”, which means all you have to do is show up 10-15 minutes before the class starts. If you do choose the “walk-in” option, please be sure to sign-in at the front desk and pay any class fee necessary. If you are interested in an ongoing monthly membership, please CONTACT US or stop by and we would be happy to bring you aboard.
What happens if I'm late to a class?
Arriving late for class not only disrupts other students and the instructors instruction flow, it detracts from your experience as well. While we attempt to accomodate every students needs, allowing a late student into class is at the sole discretion of the classes instructor. Please do your very best to arrive on-time.
How much are class fees?
Class fees sometimes vary depending on the individual class, instructor, class length and whether you choose to purchase a monthly membership or not. The fee for an individual “walk-in” usually falls between $10-$20 per student.
Do you have beginner classes?
You can join any class as a beginner unless otherwise stated in the class description. Please thoroughly read through the class descriptions included with our CLASS SCHEDULE to consider where you would like to begin. Some classes may be more physically demanding and it is important for you to know your body’s limits while pushing them at the same time without causing injury. Please feel free to CONTACT US with any questions you may have or if you are unsure of where to start.
Please be sure to inform your instructors of any serious health conditions such as neck, back or joint injuries, high blood pressure, recent surgery, and/or pregnancy and be sure to check with your doctor before attending any of our wellness classes.
How do I choose a class?
Please read through the class descriptions provided on our CLASS SCHEDULE to get an idea of the different fitness and wellness classes we offer. Think about choosing a class offering benefits that align with your personal wellness goals (fitness, stress relief, weight loss, focus, etc.) and physical condition. You may be drawn to more than one type of class and we encourage you to attend classes in conjunction as this provides a well rounded wellness regimen.
Do I need to bring anything to class?
While we attempt to provide all necessary equipment, some classes may require you to bring one or more simple items which will always be listed in our class descriptions available with our CLASS SCHEDULE. Other than that, all you need to bring is your self, an open mind, and a sense of adventure. You are also more than welcome to bring a few small items to make your experience more enjoyable such as a towel, water bottle, etc.
What about eating before class?
As Narayan offers an array of class types and everyone’s body is different, this can vary. As a general rule, it is usually a good idea to refrain from eating at least 30-60 minutes before participating in a class consisting of moderate to intense physical exertion. However, this may not apply to people requiring regular meals because of health reasons – if this is the case, please consult with your doctor on how to proceed before attending classes.
How should I dress?
This depends on what type of class you are attending. Please refer to our class descriptions and our CLASS SCHEDULE for more information. In general, most classes require students to wear loose fitting athletic style clothing that does not impede your movement. Some classes require shoes while some require you to be prepared to work in bare feet.
