What Is TMJ Therapy Massage?
TMJ therapy massage is a type of massage that focuses on the muscles and soft tissue surrounding the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the skull and is responsible for the movement of the jaw. This therapy can be performed both intra-orally (inside the mouth) and externally (on the outer jaw) to release tension and pain in the muscles and soft tissue, improve range of motion, and reduce headaches and jaw pain. This therapy can be used in conjunction with other treatments like joint mobilization, hot and cold therapy, and exercises.
TMJ Therapy Massage Techniques
During a TMJ therapy massage session, a therapist will use various techniques, such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release, stretching and mobilization of the jaw, and heat therapy, to release tension and pain in the muscles and soft tissue surrounding the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The therapist will tailor the treatment to the client’s condition and may give some stretching, strengthening, and relaxation exercises to do at home.
